For now, you should to do as I say and trust the process, but those of you who are curious I recommend reading the official Anki manual. I won’t go into why Anki works and how great it is, there are hundreds of articles on the internet detailing that (check the bottom of this article). For that reason, I am going to lay out how to use Anki for the first two years of medical school. Most people start using Anki and give it up shortly afterwards because of the steep learning curve in trying to figure out the software and mobile apps. I constantly get asked about how to use Anki. I never crammed for a single exam in medical school using this method. It has allowed me to have a life outside of studying by freeing up time for leisure, basketball, gymming, hanging out, tutoring, research, school club events, and more on top of all the material we have to study for classes. I’ve been using Anki since day one of medical school with great success. Further ReadingĪll updated sections are marked with § (Updated Jan 24, 2019). But I guess that we won’t find that out until the guinea pigs (the class of 2024) apply for residency, which will be too late for anyone in their first and second years right now.Article Contents 1. Before you could do extremely well on Step 1 and that would heavily outweigh your class rank. I don’t think you should put all your eggs in one basket and heavily rely on your step 2 score because it’s now going to look quite bad if you’re ranked in the lower 1/3 of your class. There will only be 2 things residencies will see regarding how well you did in your coursework: step 2 and your class rank. I agree that STEP 1 is your foundations and that STEP 2 will build off that, but I think class rank will play more of a roll in residencies now that they have less to judge on. I also said that I won’t be taking board studying lightly when I do start. Like I said above, you have to weigh the risks and benefits of studying for boards over classes. Leech threshold 8 lapses (I don’t care about leeches so I really just ignore these settings) I 100% recommend burying related reviews until the next day I see a definite drop in my recall once cards start hitting 6 month or longer intervals but some of this has to do with the wording of cards and I would still probably get the question right on a multiple choice test) Maximum interval 270 (this really doesn’t matter much. I use the easy interval to help space out cards with multiple cloze deletions)īurying related new cards until the next day is preferred but my school has weekly quizzes so I don’t have the time and need to see all my new cards each week before Friday Graduating interval 7 days (15 days if you choose the 8640 option in your learning steps)Įasy interval 6 days (this doesn’t really matter too much. It doesn’t make a huge difference either way) There is some convincing evidence that longer intervals are better for long term recall. Steps (in minutes) 10 1440 4320 (I recently changed to 8640 because I was getting crushed by my reviews and absolutely love it. If I have an interval falling on the day of the module final or right after it then I use the rememorize add on to move it to a few days before. Realistically, I see the cards I struggle with much more often due to me missing them. For me, this translates to seeing a card 4-5 times in a module assuming I get it right every single time. The usual first few intervals are 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 18 days, 45 days. You aren’t going to have a card go from a 14 day interval to 6 months unless you change the settings to do that. These are the settings I use and I have done fine with lecture (within 1 std dev) and extremely well on our module exams (2 std dev above the class average).
